Taiwanese hot pot chain Boiling Point has been slowing adding locations throughout the San Gabriel Valley since first arriving in Southern California in 2004 in Hacienda Heights. The newest Boiling Point is a concept store on the same block as 85°C Bakery and Green Zone.
Only open for a few weeks, fans of other Boiling Point locations have already noted a few differences from Pasadena’s version from the others: no stinky tofu on the menu, the option of adding cheese to the pot (which is reportedly much more delicious than you might think) and higher prices. The lack of stinky tofu, first noted by Eater, is probably a reflection of Boiling Point’s desire to better serve the diverse area, which may not appreciate stinky tofu. However, those that love a more authentic hot pot experience likely bemoan the lack of stinky tofu and are somewhat perplexed by the addition of cheese. By all accounts the higher prices are well worth it, as the quality of the meats and produce used in the pots are organic and/or top-quality whenever possible, making the hot pots even tastier.
The general appearance of the concept store is on the more sophisticated side, to help blend in with the distinct Old Pasadena style. Yet Boiling Point still retains some of its signature style through the exposed brick and wood.
Already established fans of Boiling Point’s other locations were pleased to discover that customer loyalty cards are transferable and points can be used and collected at any restaurant.
In addition to hot pots filled with meats, veggies and seafood and your choice of base and additional ingredients, the Pasadena Boiling Point also has an extensive beverage menu. Pair your order with a variety of teas, boba-style drinks and other beverages.
Don’t forget to save room for dessert either. Although Boiling Point is surrounded by many delicious dessert options, they offer macaron ice cream sandwiches, which are a perfect way to finish off the meal.
Parking is easy with the Schoolhouse lot across the street and you can take your selection to go or enjoy a small discount on certain items if you opt to dine in.
