IRRATIONAL MAN is a mystery film written and directed by Woody Allen and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone. It is showcasing at Laemmle Playhouse 7 in Pasadena until September 3.
As we have grown to expect from an Allen movie, IRRATIONAL MAN discusses the randomness of life and the fate that befalls us all while using lots of dialogue, dark humor, philosophy, and irony.
In IRRATIONAL MAN the jaded philosophy professor Abe Lucas (Phoenix) arrives to Braylin College to teach a summer class. There is much expectation for his arrival, as his reputation as a brilliant and eccentric man precedes him. What the staff and students do not know is that he is also a heavy drinker, borderline suicidal, who has concluded that life is mostly senseless since, even after years of volunteering, writing, and teaching, he has yet to make a significant mark in the world.
Lucas is welcomed by two women in particular – science professor Rita Richards (Parker Posey) and bright student Jill Pollard (Stone). Both of them stand in admiration of the professor, expecting more out of him than what he offers them. Richards want him to save her from her boring marriage. Pollard wants him romantically. This is a tale of two women that are much more aggressive than their male counterpart.
At some point and completely by chance professor Lucas is faced with a course of action that questions his morality but that rejuvenates him and gives him a sense of purpose. It is the catalyst for a chain of events that affects every character in the story.
IRRATIONAL MAN was filmed in Newport, Rhode Island, and its environs. The campus of Solve Regina University stands for the fictional college. The film’s soundtrack is largely by the Ramsay Lewis Trio and chosen by Allen for its “hot tone and rhythm” that “suggest the tempestuousness of every character’s personality.”
It is a fun film that will satisfy any Allen fan. IRRATIONAL MAN is 94 minutes long, rated R, with English dialogue. Follow this link to learn more about it.
