Pasadena Restaurant Week has announced the beginning of SIP-tember, the annual cocktail event held to celebrate Pasadena’s most famous foodie, Julia Child. The event begins on the culinary maven’s birthday, August 15, and ends September 24, with the Taste of Pasadena and SIP-tember Cocktail Bracket Challenge Finale at the Rose Bowl.
The event challenges the city’s top mixologists to come up with new spins and techniques on margaritas, classic cocktails and specialty drinks. Past winners for Pasadena’s Favorite Cocktail include the Broad Street Hurricane from Ruth’s Chris Steak House, the Cucumber Skinny-tini from Toro Sushi and the Vin de Pomplemousse from Green Street Restaurant.
You can vote as well as check out this year’s contenders on the Pasadena Restaurant Week website, which has a ballot that includes a list of participants and their contributions to the event. There are quite a few to try, but the competition is over the next six weeks, so you can probably drink your way through many of them before you find your favorite.
Green Street Restaurant holds the current cocktail champ title and many of Pasadena’s finest restaurants are returning to battle for the honor, including: The Otis Bar at La Grande Orange, The Tap Room at the Langham Pasadena, Bistro 45, SORRISO/Bar Celona, The Luggage Room at La Grande Orange and Bar 1886 at The Raymond.
New contenders entering the fray for the first time this year include: Alondro Hot Wings, Del Frisco’s Grille, dusitD2 hotel constance pasadena, Madeline Garden Bistro, Magnolia House and White Horse Lounge.
To celebrate Julia Child, restaurants throughout the city take part in the annual event on August 15th, which marks the 102nd anniversary of America’s favorite television chef and cookbook author. At 7pm, a citywide birthday toast is offered to the queen of cuisine and patrons of participating restaurants are encouraged to celebrate in cocktail attire from the 50s, 60s and 70s.
Last year, there were 400 attendees on hand to attend the finale at the Rose Bowl. The crowd got to sip on craft cocktails from the finalists as well as small bites and new dishes from the restaurants they represent.
