Once upon a time as a college student in the Pasadena area, finding a place open around the clock seemed to be an impossible task. Only taco trucks and coffee shop chains could be counted on for a meal in the wee small hours. And regularly eating at taco trucks and coffee shops is an excellent way to pack on the notorious Freshman 10 (or more). Not to mention the expense of dining at chain restaurants. It seems that for the new class of college kids in the area, this won’t be a problem as Halfsies Bistro & Bakery opened on August 8.
As Pasadena continues to grow in gastronomic goodies and more and more expensive full-scale dining restaurants open around town, Halfsies Bistro & Bakery looks to be a unique concept. By day, it will certainly make a great pit stop for shoppers and workers on the go that want something quick and delicious without breaking the bank.
By night, Halfsies will likely be filled with college students and insomniacs looking for something that won’t put them over budget and will fill satisfy empty bellies. Halfsies is probably also set to be a great stop for tourists and visitors that arrive at off times and need somewhere to eat after a red-eye flight into Burbank Airport.
The menu is as all encompassing as it’s planned 24-hour availability. Entrees include comforting pastas and stews while the salads and sides look like they can be snacks on their own. And of course there are coffee drinks, breads and pastries to go with everything.
And Halfsies is community focused as well. The Old Pasadena website states that half of the grand opening proceeds will be given to charity. And charity seems to be an ongoing part of the Halfsies mission.
A press release on the Halfsies website reports, “The promise was a decision made by the collective owners to use half of all profits after start up costs, fair employee wages, operating costs, etc., to make donations to local charities and pay taxes. Once the decision had been made, we made a promise to never stray from doing what Halfsies could to help local charities.”
Sounds like a fair deal and welcome place in the neighborhood. Halfsies will have posted hours for a while before eventually going round the clock.
