Whether you’re a newbie to sewing or know your way around the machine, The Sewing Studio in Old Pasadena is there to foster a love of fashion. Merging practical knowledge about making things by hand with creativity, The Sewing Studio helps kids bring their creative ideas to life and teaches grownups basics they may have missed from high school home economics classes. From women looking to make their own Little Black Dress to kids with a curiosity about how things get made, co-owner Cynthia Harvey offers a variety of classes for students of all ages and genders. Cynthia was kind enough to take some time away from her busy schedule to tell Around Town Pasadena about The Sewing Studio—and where she goes to grab a bite.
And guess what, our fashion editor, Robin Puelma independently discovered The Sewing Studio, here!
Can you give me a bit of background on yourself and how you first got into fashion design?
Like the kids and teens in our fashion & sewing classes/camps I too loved making my own outfits and playing dress-up as a child. Once I realized I could make a career doing what I loved — I studied fashion and traveled the world with the idea of developing my collection.
How did the idea for the Sewing Studio come about?
As I begin perfecting my craft as a fashion designer/stylist/costumer/instructor, women would ask me if I’d be interested in teaching. My research revealed a whole generation of career women did not know how to sew. Many of them with young children who are creative want to learn more about becoming a fashion designer. I also find that some of these kids and teens are pursing career in medicine and law but they also want to be comfortable using the sewing machine. The Sewing Studio is a great place to learn and share and the creative synergy inspires collaborations and new friendships.
Who can enjoy the Sewing Studio?
Anyone who likes to challenge themselves including men and boys, who are not afraid of the creative form of expression. For example, we featured a 3-hour “Paint Your T-Shirt” workshop this summer. Students are excited and amazed at the new technology we use that allows them to develop their T-shirt design.
What are some typical programs offered?
Beside many 3-hour adult workshops like “Mommie and Me,” “Paint Your T-Shirt,” and our ever-popular, “Sew Basics,” we specialize in teaching a Kids Can Sew & Fashion Design program as well as our Teen Fashion Series classes.
Can you tell me about any upcoming events/specials?
The Sewing Studio held an open casting call for the spinoff of the popular Bravo TV reality show Project Runway recently. The new show “Project Runway Jr.” will feature student designers of ages 13–18 competing for scholarship dollars to attend fashion-college.
We are also very excited about our plans to launch a new line of contemporary dresses and accessories that will retail both in the shop and online.
Where do you get your inspiration?
As a fashion design advisor at FIDM, I have the opportunity to work with many talented students. The campus is a great source of inspiration where ideas flow and deadlines loom. I am personally inspired as a fashion designer by other artists, traveling, and several online platforms.
What are some of your favorite places in Pasadena for shopping, food, etc?
Urth Cafe is one of my favorite places to eat in Pasadena, the food is fresh and they seem to use quality ingredients. I do appreciate the convenience of walking a block or two from The Sewing Studio in Old Pasadena to Sephora to pick up my favorite lipstick or order a quick salad at the Cheesecake Factory.
Is there anything else that you would like people to know about?
What people may not know is that The Sewing Studio team offers a variety of creative services to the community, including studio rental by-the-hour/day/week, hosting birthday parties and Girl Scout troops, as well as custom design services.
