For the first time ever Pasadena will lend itself to the car-free open-street event known as CicLAvia this Sunday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Participants will be able to travel along Colorado Boulevard, either by walking, bicycling, skating, or using any other non-motorized wheel vehicle, and explore a few side streets and parks in the City. Various activities are planned throughout the route, including musical entertainment at the parks and at Zona Rosa Caffe (15 S. El Molino Ave.), photo booths at The Pasadena Playhouse (39 S. El Molino Ave.) and at the Laemmle Playhouse 7 (673 E. Colorado Blvd.), and a little dancing with Muse/Ique at Holliston Avenue from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be food trucks parked at multiple locations as well.
This event will be free of charge, thanks to a grant from Metro Los Angeles. You will be able to start and end anywhere along the 3.5 miles route. There will be no cars on Colorado Boulevard between Pasadena Avenue and Bonnie Avenue, and the course will veer north and south on Raymond Avenue and south only on Lake Avenue. The flow on the streets will go both ways, as regular traffic would.
CicLAvia will have four Hubs throughout the route. Make sure to stop by at one of them and fill out the free drawing form. Several event supporters have donated goods and services for this drawing and by participating you stand to win tickets to the Rose Parade, free entrances to local museums, a bicycle, and more.
Again, you do not need a bike to participate. But if you want one, you could rent it from a local shop like Pasadena Cyclery (626.795.2866), Incycle Bicycles (626.577.0440), and Velo Pasadena Inc. (626.304.0064). The bikes must be reserved ahead of time, however.
The rules are: everyone under 18 on any type of wheels, even as a passenger, must wear a helmet; no picture-taking while in motion; everyone riding should be proficient at it (this is no place for teaching kids to ride their bike); and have a great attitude and be ready to have fun!
