Chef Claud Beltran has been a fixture on the Los Angeles dining scene for something like 25 years. Mentored by Chef Thomas Keller of legendary fine dining establishment The French Laundry up in wine country, and locally of the Bouchon Bistro, Beltran has had several forays into food. His latest, Bacchus Kitchen seems to be quite a hit although it has been officially open for only a month or so.
Originally due to open at the beginning of the year, Bacchus Kitchen has taken over the former Lebanese Kitchen space at 1384 East Washington Boulevard. Even before it opened, the LA Times named it one of “Six restaurants in Pasadena to try right now,” which included other trendy spots with food you can’t find just anywhere.
The menu looks to be internationally inspired with everything from tandoori dishes to tamales being reported on Yelp! Before opening, Bacchus Kitchen was only open for certain nights as a tease for local gourmets, but now has a regular schedule of special events and regular dinners from 5-10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Unlike the nearby eclectic eatery / catering company spot Claud & Co. Eatery, Bacchus Kitchen is a more refined spot with an elegant dining room and creative décor that includes wine bottle sconces and old doors with peeling paint.
Erica Wayne at Pasadena Weekly waxes poetic about her long love of Chef Beltran’s food over the years and uses powerful terms to describe everything from the “beauty” of his plates to the “cute” pig logo. She then goes on to call things almost wonderful, although she does ameliorate that a rice dish might be a touch salty.
It sounds as though although the restaurant has only been open briefly, it is already a popular favorite in the neighborhood. Yelpers! Have been enjoying the ambience, great service and flavorful food.
Although the menu is pretty intriguing and designed for a foodie that isn’t faint of heart, items like a burger are meant to be familiar favorites for the less adventurous, but delicious enough to be enjoyed by all.
As critic Wayne notes, even better is the close proximity to the newly opened Lark Cake Shop, which is open later on weekend nights, for a perfect sweet finish after your meal.
