A Steinway piano is no ordinary instrument. Building one is an intricate process and to properly play it takes a skillful hand. Develop a true appreciation for the amazing Steinway by attending two free events scheduled for this week in Pasadena. (And after you’ve been, check out http://steinway.com/ for more.)
Wednesday, April 22 – “Note by Note: The Making of Steinway L1037”
This will be Pasadena Conservatory of Music (PCM)’s movie night for the month of April. “Note by Note: The Making of Steinway L1037” is a documentary that follows the creation of a Steinway concert grand (#L1037) from the moment the prime material is removed from the forest to the moment the final product plays its first notes at a concert hall. It tells of the relationship between a piano and the musician who plays it, describes the manufacturing process, and helps you realize why this is such a magnificent instrument.
Prior to the screening, Susan Svrcek, PCM Steinway Artist, will hold a brief presentation to tell you what it took to purchase the two Steinways now at Barrett Hall and the differences between them.
The film will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Barrett Hall at PCM – 100 North Hill Avenue in Pasadena 91106. Tickets are free but must be reserved at http://notebynote.brownpapertickets.com
Friday, April 24 – Pianist Daria van den Bercken at Steinway Gallery
Dutch-Russian pianist Daria van den Bercken is in a two-week International Artist Residency that will take her to various spots around Los Angeles, one of them Old Pasadena.
Van den Bercken is known for her dedication to sharing Handel’s music with as many people as possible. She has, for example, played Handel’s songs while being towed through the streets of Amsterdam and also while suspended from a crane floating above crowds of stunned Brazilians.
Now, thanks to a grant from the City of Los Angeles and Dutch Culture USA, you can see her perform free of charge, no reservation required, at Steinway Piano Gallery (150 E. Colorado Blvd, Suite 101) at 7 p.m. on April 24. The selections of piano solos will be announced by the artist.
