Southern California is well-known for having a sushi bar in every strip mall — here’s one of many we have reviewed –but it looks like a new raw fish dish is taking over. Poké, is a Hawaiian dish that has been popping up all over the Los Angeles area, now including Pasadena. Spinfish Poké House hasn’t been open that long, but its already a popular favorite around town.
Inspired by their travels to Hawaii over the years, and their desire to open a restaurant, Spinfish Poké House is the result of two friends’ love of the islands and a longing for poké once they got back to the mainland.
Traditionally, poké is sliced fish topped with things like seaweed and although it is definitely from Hawaii, its exact origins are a little fuzzy. Its current incarnation tends to have a lot of surf culture, both past and present attached to it, which is why it tends to be popular in beach areas as it makes a perfect protein packed snack both pre and post surf session. But it’s awesomeness isn’t limited to the sea, its great to have some poké inland as well—for fuel on a shopping trip in the Mills Place alley, where it Spinfish can be found just off Colorado.
Spinfish has a menu filled with 9 different variations of poké, including the Aloha 808, already a Yelpers’s favorite, topped with ogo limu, hawaiian sea salt, chili flake, green onion, and sweet onion. If you want it on the spicy side, there’s a sriacha version, a sweet spicy and there are also fruity versions and gingery-ones. And of course, there’s the option to build your own bowl of poké, with the create-your-own-option that allows you to select the fishes and the sauce, toppings and base (rice, greens or noodles) upon which you want your poké to rest. Mix it all together and you have quite the tasty dish. You can probably even convince the staff to mix up your base a bit with both greens and rice. Most visitors have found that the staff is happy to help you decide and explain the lengthy list of options that are available.
By the way, here’s a Poke recipe to give you an idea of why the rage.
