It’s Awards Season and the Laemmle’s “Umpteenth” Annual Oscar Contest is back in town. Check out the online form for your chance to win tickets. Also this month, the Laemmle is also hosting the Pasadena International Film Festival, showcasing 85 films over the course of a week.
The Laemmle hosts an annual contest for Oscar predictions, if you predict correctly, or close to the way the Academy leans, you’ll be the proud winner of tickets to the independent-film focused movie theater. Entering the contest looks to be an easy process and winners are announced on the Laemmle’s blog the day after the Oscars (February 23rd this year).
And because it is Oscar month, many of the films currently showing are set for Oscar nominations in one category or another including Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game, Mr. Turner, Selma, Two Days, One Night and Whiplash as well as Leviathan in the Foreign Language category with contender Timbuktu opening next week, and Song of the Sea in the Animated category.
Also coming to the Laemmle is the Pasadena International Film Festival (PIFF), according to the Pasadena Weekly. Held Feb. 11-16, PIFF includes 86 new feature and short films. The brainchild of local couple, Jessica Hardin and her husband Marco Neves, the festival is the result of the duo noticing that Pasadena’s thriving art community is short on film.
Only in its second year, the festival has attracted over 300 entries from around the globe, with only 86 being chosen for showing. Highlights include a local-centric documentary, Bungalow Heaven — Preserving a Neighborhood, about Pasadena and a bank-heist thriller 7 Minutes, starring Jason Ritter. The festival also includes a ceremony and live music. Visit the official site at http://www.pasadenafilmfestival.org for a full roster of the events, to buy passes and to check out what’s playing.
