Even before Gone Girl finally hit theaters last month, it seemed like it had already been out for centuries, with gossip blogs and entertainment magazines talking about it nonstop. The story, the acting—especially Ben Affleck—were all getting plenty of buzz. It turns out that Gone Girl may be one of a few films worth the hype because now that it has been out, people are still talking about it, and loving it.
Dark and disturbing and taking twists and turns right up until the final scene, Gone Girl is an expertly made film that shows off the talents of veteran star Ben Affleck like he’s never been seen before. Rosamund Pike does a great job of playing the title character and that’s all I will say about her without giving away the film’s many secrets.
Stylish and suave, the movie expertly manipulates the audience so that they are as surprised as the characters when the newest twist occurs.
Well ahead of its opening day, Gone Girl has been drawing Oscar buzz and now that I’ve seen the film, it’s easy to see why. Affleck especially is at once mysterious and able to make the audience empathize with his character. Not much goes amiss, although I did feel that the film probably could have been cut a little shorter without losing any of its power.
If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out while it’s still playing at the ArcLight Pasadena and you’ll understand all the excitement as Oscar time draws near.
