The pizza may be New York, but the style is all LA. Tomato Pie Pizza already has locations in Melrose and Silverlake and has chosen South Pasadena for it’s latest opening.
According to the website, Tomato Pie originally opened on Melrose after a lot of effort and a lot of experimentation. Once they really got going, they opened another spot in Silverlake and now they’re coming to our neck of the woods.
A lot of places call themselves New York style, but Tomato Pie really takes things seriously and has even landed on lists of the best pizza places in the nation—no easy task in a nation filled with different pizza places on every corner in every town.
Once the doors open, try the famous “Grandma,” which GQ writer Alan Richman describes as “a traditional and gorgeously assembled pizza with crushed tomatoes, fresh garlic, and a scattering of mozzarella, basil, oregano, and Pecorino Romano.”
Tomato Pie has other dishes as well including the namesake “Tomato Pie,” which Eater explains as an East Coast favorite consisting of “a square pan baked pizza covered in sauce with no mozzarella, but dusted with grated Pecorino Romano.” And the menu also lists plenty of pasta, subs and salads in case you want more than just a slice. And a liquor license is also reported to be in the works as well.
Watch for the opening on Mission Street, in the space that used to be occupied by Livin’art, a furniture store.
