Sun Rai (pronounced “sun ray”) is a cool looking Australian dude with an awesome haircut whose music combines jazzy sounds, rock, and pop to create tunes that will make you tap your foot and move to their beat. In Los Angeles since 2012, he’s got titles like “Instant California” and “San Francisco Street” that will also capture you for his lyrics. Sun Rai will be performing this Saturday, August 16, from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at One Colorado, free of charge, with limited seating, in an event hosted by One Colorado’s Italian restaurant Il Fornaio.
On August 23 you can check out the indie pop/rock sounds of Banta, an Echo Park based sextet. You can check them out ahead of time at Bantaband.com or on their Facebook page. Described as a band “that can still make us feel something,” this may be the perfect plan to groove the day’s summer heat away. This evening is also free of charge, hosted by another One Colorado restaurant – Sushi Roku.
The last of the month’s concerts will happen on August 30 when Cheers Elephant will perform. I’d say go just so that you can check out the foursome’s haircuts, but in reality their music is just as good. Whether they intended it or not, they will remind you of The Beatles and other like boy groups because of their voice harmonies and popish sounds. Transplanted to Southern California from Philadelphia, they are hailed as the band that can make “your dad’s toe tap, you mom’s hip shake, and your sister’s heart throb,” (truthfully, none of which is on my wish list of things to see!) but we get the message – they’re fun, carry about a bit of nostalgia, and an entire family should be able to enjoy them. Also free of charge, this concert will be hosted by One Colorado’s Mexican café – Escuela Taqueria.
Summer is fleeting folks! So take yourselves out into the warmth out there to enjoy one or all of these great August evenings at One Colorado (24 E. Union Street). All concerts run from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
