I never realized this shop existed (embarrassingly enough), until now. Maybe it’s not on my radar because I don’t sew. (Buttons. I can sew on buttons.) But whatever the reason, I’m glad it appeared to me because it offers a unique product and a creative outlet unseen in Pasadena. What store, you ask? The Sewing Studio, located on S Fair Oaks Ave., just below Green Street.
Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Old Town, the Sewing Studio is an amazing place with a neat story. Co-founder Cynthia Harvey, who’s adored fashion and design since she was nine, launched the Sewing Studio after hearing about art cutbacks in various Southern California schools. “I wanted to offer fashion sewing classes that are fun and affordable, with an emphasis on looks inspired by current fashion designers,” says Harvey. Neat. And this gal knows what she’s doing. Over her lifetime, Harvey has acquired some serious career credentials–she received an education from FIDM, traveled the world to exotic places, and gained a celebrity client list that includes Janet Jackson, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez, and George Clooney.
Today, the Sewing Studio is an oasis for those interested in sewing, design, and fashion. Classes range from sewing a tote bag and a simple boxy top to a classic shift dress, tiered skirt and easy pants. All at an affordable price. Each class is $175 for a 2.5 hour once-a-week class for four weeks! There are also a myriad of specialty courses, like the Teen Fashion Prom Series or the Paint Your T-Shirt Workshop. (Beginners are of course welcomed!) Or for those of you (me included) who don’t sew but love design, the Sewing Studio has got you covered:
“You can take your ideas to a whole new level with custom designs by an experienced fashion designer that value craftsmanship far beyond your expectations. In addition we are able to recreate any of your existing garments with a choice of new colors, fabrics, and creative design options infusing new life into what was an old favorite. As always our products are handmade in our Pasadena design studio to maintain attention to detail and strict quality control.”
Plus, this Saturday from 12:30-1:30 designer Michelle Uberreste (contestant on Project Runway: Under the Gunn) will speak about her five years as a designer and her experience on the show. Perfect for teens or young adults interested in sewing or design; so be sure to RSVP at email@example.com.
