There may be more than a few places around town to find a gyro. But there aren’t a whole lot of places that focus on Greek specialties. Kelly Markus hopes to change that with the recent opening of Oregano Fresh Greek.
Markus tells Pasadena Monthly that he hopes to eventually open more Oregano Fresh Greek locations, but for now he’s on South Lake, next to Jimmy John.
Born and raised in a Detroit suburb, in a second generation Greek family, Markus says that since moving to the area, he has been looking for a Greek restaurant that serves up the foods he remembers from his childhood for a reasonable price. For the new venture, restaurant industry veteran Markus has partnered with his wife, Lucy Gan, who is bringing her years of experience at Panda Express and Herbalife to the table.
Think the popular Daphne’s chain, but more intimate. Decked out in a clean white look and plastered with posters of Greece, Oregano Fresh Greek has an easy to read menu format filled with sandwiches, including gyros, salads and sides and Greek specialties like moussaka as well as Greek sweets. Oregano Fresh Greek promises fresh ingredients and fine cuts of meat prepared just like Grandma used to make.
As the place has only been opened a few weeks, there are probably a few kinks to work out, but the concept sounds delicious and the service friendly.
