In the Southland we are in “movie-mode” until the Oscars. And in Pasadena we even get our own film festival this month! From Feb. 12 through 16, the inaugural “Pasadena International Film Festival” will provide us multiple opportunities to watch movies submitted by filmmakers from all over the world, plus panel discussions, parties, and more.
The festival will see a soft opening on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 12:45 p.m. with a performance by “Out of Context,” Cal Tech’s a’ cappella group. Movie screenings will then follow starting at 1 p.m. at Laemmle’s Playhouse 7.
The official Opening Night “Great Gatsby” Black Tie Gala will take place Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Westin Pasadena Hotel featuring the Pasadena Symphony-POPS, as well as a red carpet event where actors Michael Gross (Family Ties), James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Mimi Kennedy (Midnight in Paris), Alicia Witt (Law and Order: Criminal Intent), and Jay O. Sanders (The Day After Tomorrow) will be honored.
On Saturday, Feb. 15, the Central Branch of the Pasadena Public Library will host seminars led by entertainment industry professionals that will deal with topics like: “The Transformational Power of Women in Film”, and “The Future of Film…Where are we Headed?”
Additionally, every evening will see a party at a different local venue, as well as a screening of an independent short, feature, documentary film, or web series from around the world. This film festival is promising that 80% of its programming will come from submissions. As a result, 13 countries will be represented, including Romania, Slovenia, South Korea, and Brazil.
On Sunday, Feb. 16, the Pasadena Museum of History will host “Old Hollywood: The History of Film in Pasadena” featuring the world-renowned historian Marc Wannamaker, as well as a screening of the 1912 film, “When Kings Were The Law” followed by a wine and cheese reception.
Then the five-day event will be thrillingly wrapped up with an Award Ceremony at the Laemmle Playhouse 7 Theatre awarding the best films of the festival, followed by an after-party at the Vertical Wine Bistro.
Are you excited yet?! A list of the films to be screened and the option to purchase an all inclusive pass or a weekend pass is available at www.PasadenaFilmFestival.org.
