Step into the land of the whimsical: Gold Bug Pasadena, located on the south side of Green Street near One Colorado, offers unique jewelry, accessories, and home decor you seriously can’t find anywhere. Except maybe a taxidermy’s office. Or an entomologist’s den. Because the pieces featured here include stuffed creatures (like a taxidermy deer wearing a tiara), framed butterflies, and antler jewelry, just to name a few. Still interested? Then enter the realm of beyond normal. Enter, Gold Bug.
“Unlike the typical offerings found amongst the shops and boutiques that make up One Colorado in Old Town Pasadena, Gold Bug is more like a 21st century cabinet of curiosities brought to life by 100+ contemporary artists and bound by threads of science and natural history. Curated with its own neo-victorian point of view, Gold Bug invites its customers to fall into a truly unique gallery experience, presenting works by some of today’s most interesting emerging designers in a retail space with a museum atmosphere,” writes its Facebook page. And it’s true. Walking into the space, you’re greeted by dozens of items displayed behind glass. (You’re almost unsure if you can buy anything.)
But thankfully, you can. I’m digging artist Melissa Joy Manning’s antler necklaces, specifically, the 14K yellow gold 20 inch necklace with drilled antler tip. Price is high ($365) but worth it for its unique design and artistic creativity. Or artist Jamie Joseph, who works specifically with stones. The 14K gold earrings with faceted citrine drops ($605) look like radiating orbs of sunlight.
If you like something on the edgier side, you’d love Jacqueline Cullen’s black diamond ring, which looks like something forged by the Dark Lord in Lord of the Rings–beautifully dark, exquisitely alluring ($935).
So, if you’re interested in viewing a treasure trove of unique goodies, come visit this one-of-a-kind boutique right here in Old Town Pasadena. And leave with something beyond your imagination.
