During the holidays we all search for things to do with our families, and we are here to tell you about one great family event in Pasadena.
“Aladdin and His Winter Wish” is playing at The Pasadena Playhouse and it is absolutely wonderful, not only for your little ones, but for you, grandpa, everyone!
The musical is done Panto style, meaning that a fairy tale, in this case Aladdin’s, gets modernized to include current events and familiar locations and is mixed with contemporary pop music that everybody has heard. As a result, in the midst of seeing Aladdin meet the princess of his dreams, in this production you’ll also hear Bruno Mars’ songs like “Billionaire” and “Treasure,” and Carly Rae Jepsen’s popular “Call Me Maybe,” between many others.
Do not imagine yourself tasked with keeping your kids still during this theater performance. Panto is interactive. It encourages everyone to cheer, boo, laugh, sing along, and participate. When Abanazar (Josh Adamson) comes out, everyone is expected to boo him, because he’s the bad guy that wants to take Aladdin away, and when Aladdin asks what he is supposed to do with that old lamp, everyone is supposed to shout out: “Rub the lamp!” The play wouldn’t be the same without it!
Jordan Fisher plays Aladdin. He is well known as the star of the Disney Channel program “Teen Beach Movie.” Fisher’s voice is beautiful and if our telling you does not convince you, check it out for yourself – go to his website: www.JordanFisherOfficial.com, enter the password “PasadenaPlayhouse” and get a free download.
The Princess is played by Ashley Argota, who is best known for her role as Lulu in Nickelodeon’s show “True Jackson, VP.” Adamson teams up with Bruce Vilanch and Ben Giroux for a trio that infuses humor and cleverness into the play. They will make you, parents, laugh about things that your children will have no clue!
Also in the style of Panto, there are a couple of well-known actors that you’ll recognize – Richard Karn, of “Home Improvement” and “Family Feud,” plays the Sultan, and Ben Vereen, of Broadway’s “Pippin” and “Jesus Christ Superstar” makes for a quite spirited Genie.
The play is humorous, the voices delightful, and as if that wasn’t enough your ticket includes the enjoyment of a “Winter Wonderland” in the theater’s courtyard, complete with holiday carolers, crafts, activities, games, and photo opportunities with Santa.
This is a Lythgoe Family Production, the second at The Pasadena Playhouse. The first one was impressively successful and this new production is even better!
If you go, practice these lyrics to the tune of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” ahead of time. You’ll thank us!
“Clap your hands for the Bride
And stomp your feet for the groom
Aladdin and Princess are gonna wed
Twankey and Wishee have good times ahead.
Let us root, root, root for the Genie
His magic will rule in the sand.
And it’s 1, 2, 3 rubs to hear
Your wish is my command.”
“Aladdin and His Winter Wish” will perform until December 29. Tickets range $34 to $75. See times available at www.PasadenaPlayhouse.org or call (626) 356-7529. The Pasadena Playhouse is located at 39 South El Molino Avenue.
