Nebraska opens today, and it’s already generating plenty of Oscar buzz. With a cast that stars Bruce Dern and Will Forte and directed by Alexander Payne of Sideways and The Descendents, it’s easy to see why this film is a contender.
Ostensibly a father/son road trip movie as Bruce Dern and Will Forte drive from Montana to Nebraska, the film will most likely prove to be a little more complicated as the duo meet up with various people to whom Dad owes money.
Although Payne has had Nebraska on the back-burner for years, he delayed making the film because after the success and popularity of Sideways, he didn’t want to become known only for road-trip movies.
Filmed in black and white so that the landscape of the journey becomes a deeper part of the story, the film has already been well received by critics. Rotten Tomatoes has already given the film an 88% rating and it was nominated for the Palme d’Or award when it debuted at the Cannes film festival. Bruce Dern won the Best Actor award at Cannes and I’m looking forward to seeing him in a starring role after so many years.
Nebraska hits theaters this weekend, and is showing at our ArcLight Pasadena. If you happen to be a member of the theater, the ArcLight is live-streaming a Q&A session with the cast of Nebraska from the Hollywood ArcLight on November 17. More details on that can be found at the ArcLight’s website.
