Sushi Roku in Miller Alley at One Colorado was one of the first, if not the first, elegant sushi bar chains to grow a cult following amongst both foodies and celebrities, and I’ve always thought it great that Pasadena was deemed cool enough to have our own location.
Most definitely on the pricey side, Sushi Roku probably isn’t your go-to neighborhood sushi bar, although it’s prime location in Miller Alley makes it a very convenient stop over whether you happen to be shopping or hitting up the movie theater. The current movie theater incarnation serves food, but I’ve always loved stopping into Sushi Roku for one of their special creations and then catching a show, a habit that I’m unlikely to change.
So what’s good? The sushi. Sushi Roku offers your favorite traditional sushi dishes, but they are best known for their updated takes on the Japanese cuisine.
While I’m normally a sushi traditionalist, at Sushi Roku I enjoy trying some of the more unusual offerings, from rolls to appetizers. They pair especially well with the restaurant’s wide range of cocktail creations; so going for Happy Hour is a great idea. Especially on Sundays when Happy Hour lasts all night, but it’s fairly extensive the rest of the week and even available on Saturday from 3-7.
I like to get a little of everything, so the next time I go back I intend to try some Yelp! reviewers favorites like truffled lotus root, or the albacore tacos from the Happy Hour menu. And of course the classic Sushi Roku favorites like the spicy tuna on crispy rice. The best part is that unlike many sushi bars, Sushi Roku offers a plentiful dessert menu, with some options even available on the happy hour menu, like the chocolate volcano or banana bread pudding, perfect for a sweet finish on a snack or meal.
