It is actually an 11-day celebration, but we know it as LA Beer Week. Now in its fifth year, this event is a great opportunity to taste and learn about beer and about the establishments in Los Angeles and Orange County that serve craft and artisan brews. It began yesterday, Sept. 19, and it will extend until Sept. 29, with a tempting opening gala this Sunday, Sept. 22, at Union Station.
Pasadena is not left out of the LA Beer Week festivities. Last night Kings Row Gastropub threw one of its famous pig roasts and served the Californian brew Ruhstaller. Likewise Dog Haus Biergarten served a Belgium and Stone Brewery collaboration.
If you want to participate in LA Beer Week 2013 without leaving town, here are a few dates in Pasadena that you can plan for:
• The Stone Company Store (220 S. Raymond Ave. #103) will celebrate Beer Week and its first anniversary starting at 11 a.m. today, Friday Sept. 20.
• On Tuesday, Sept. 24, and Wednesday, Sept. 25, Kings Row Gastropub (20 E. Colorado Blvd.) will serve Hangar 24 and more.
• On Tuesday, Sept. 25, The Blind Donkey (53 E. Union St.) will hold a Ballast Point Tap Takeover.
• On Thursday, Sept. 26, Lucky Baldwins Pub (17 S. Raymond Ave.) will hold its annual pub crawl starting at 6.30 p.m.
Of course, you have the option of extending your “research” to the rest of the County. Check out the list of participating locations at www.labeerweek.com
The opening gala is particularly exciting. It is, of course, restricted to 21-year-olds and older and it will be held between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. A four-hour session ticket sells for $70 and it includes a commemorative glass, unlimited 4 oz. beer samples and appetizers. Since it is at the gorgeous Union Station Ticketing Hall it makes it really easy to NOT drink and drive. You can purchase tickets to the gala at http://www.itsmyseat.com/events/154967.html
Plato never said (as some think he did): “He was a wise man who invented beer.” But if you think he may as well have said it… this is the week for you!
