Considered one of the Bard’s late romances, “Pericles, Prince of Tyre” contains everything that make the romances special – the reunion of long-lost family members, fantasy, magic, the presence of a superhuman goddess, shipwrecks, swordfights, and so forth.
Pericles would have been the action movie of Shakespeare’s time, with not just one shipwreck but two, with people thought dead coming back to life, with jousting tournaments, and with a jump in time that allows the audience to see the characters both young and old.
In the story Pericles solves a riddle that puts his life in peril. He runs away from an evil King by getting on a ship off to see the world. In the process, he survives a shipwreck, wins himself a wife, becomes a father, then a widower, and later learns of the death of his child, Marina. (Insert time jump here.) Over a decade later, Pericles is depressed, unkempt and joyless. But Diana the goddess speaks to him and sets him on the path to a joyful reunion with both his daughter and wife.
At A Noise Within “Pericles, Prince of Tyre” is a feel-good production par excellence. Deborah Strang – as the narrator, Gower, and dressed like a dark Mary Poppins – takes you by the hand of sorts to lead you through the story. A group of dancers (ballerinas and mimes clad in white) add movement to it, keeping it always lively, artistically beautiful, and in some cases significantly adding to it, as during Pericles and Thaisa’s love scene.
Every actor in this production is excellent, delivering an accessible and enjoyable performance with nothing weird about it, other than perhaps the tournament’s horses.
Treat yourself to A Noise Within to enjoy this play that today, just as in Shakespeare’s time, is a favorite.
