Pure Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are becoming increasingly common on the streets of Pasadena. You have likely seen the Nissan Leaf or the Tesla Model S gliding silently by on pure electric power. And while these cars are helping to rid this beautiful city of both noise and air pollution, potential buyers are often discouraged by lack of charging infrastructure and so called “range anxiety.”
Many people don’t realize that the most convenient place to charge your EV is often in your own garage. And Pasadena Water and Power is ready to help you do that with discounted off-hour rates for EV owners. These discounted rates help drive the already low cost of fueling an EV even lower (about 4 times cheaper than a gas car). This way you can treat your car just like your cell phone. Plug it in when you get home, and in the morning you have a full battery for whatever adventures the day brings.
Even if you don’t own your own home you can still have a charger installed where you live. Thanks to legislation recently passed here in California Home Owners Associations are mandated to grant the request of a member to install a home charging station. This lowers the bar for EV adoption and makes owning one practical for a larger portion of the population.
However, if you still need to top off while you’re out and about there are several public charging stations scattered throughout Pasadena. Primarily in Old Town parking garages there are also charging stations on the PCC and Caltech campuses (you can see a full list at this website). These charging stations ensure that when you return to your car you will have ample range to get to your next destination.
Buyers are quickly learning that buying an electric vehicle does not have to be a compromise. Not only are there discounted rates for home charging, and convenient public stations, but also there are generous tax credits and rebates available for buyers of electric vehicles. The federal government offers a $7,500 tax credit for people buying EVs, and up to an additional $2,500 is available for California drivers. Check with the City of Pasadena for more information about the benefits of owning and driving an Electric Vehicle in Pasadena.
