There’s more choices for a cup of brew than just a corner Starbucks. Copa Vida has opened in Old Pasadena, offering a taste of Italian café culture and more than just your average cup of coffee.
Copa Vida is operated by two former members of the Café Dulce pop-up, Frank La and Sam Hong. In this new incarnation of the coffeehouse, Copa Vida creates new ways to experience something as humble as the iced coffee.
Try the freddo, a combination of two shots of espresso laced with agave syrup and shaken with ice to form a slush. Popular in Italy, the refreshing drink is hard to find in Los Angeles.
Tasting Table interviewed La, who says, “Flash-chilling the espresso brings out some very different flavor notes. Sometimes I almost get a sweet pork flavor.”
Also on the menu is the more calorie dense “Shakerato,” an iced double shot with Straus cream and house-made vanilla syrup.
Copa Vida uses beans from 49th Parallel, Verve and Ritual Roasters, and even the classic iced coffee has a story. Steeped for around 14 hours, the tap is pressurized with nitrogen to keep the inky treat fresh and get a thicker texture than your average iced coffee.
If you don’t care for coffee, there is also an extensive and impressive selection of teas to choose from.
But the coffeehouse doesn’t just brew coffee and tea, you can also snag sandwiches and salads by Chef Erick Lee, as well as brunch and finish it all off with a sweet treat from Cake Monkey. 70 S. Raymond Ave. Pasadena, CA 91105 http://www.copa-vida.com/
