You may recall the famous album “Neverland” by Nirvana that featured a baby in a pool…the pool was none other than the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. Other recognizable names that have utilized or practiced at the RBAC are athletes Jason Lezak, Emily Adamczyk, and Kevin Kuhn.
Lezak is a four-time Olympic gold medalist, having competed in 2000, 2004, 2008, and most recently, in the 2012 London games. While he didn’t make it to the finals last time around, he swam alongside Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones and Ryan Lochte to round out a strong team USA. Lezak graduated from Irvine High School and the University of Santa Barbara. Unique to Lezak is his coaching philosophy: he simply doesn’t have one, and has always preferred to train alone.
For all its high profile members and guests, the Aquatics Center is still home to basic learn-to-swim lessons, community-based water polo, and junior lifeguard programs. Regular guests include the UCLA men’s water polo team, and it has hosted Team USA Olympic Men’s Water Polo training games. The Rose Bowl Masters Swim team also practices and competes here.
The Aquatics Center opened in 1989, funded with a $4.5-million city loan and $2 million in private donations. The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center is truly a gem of Pasadena. The city holds bragging rights to one of the most interesting, efficient, and modern swimming centers in the country.
The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center has its own Facebook page. Become a fan by finding them on FB or going for a swim at 360 N. Arroyo Blvd, Pasadena, CA.
