We have noticed over and over that a home is sold at the curb – that “curb appeal” we often talk about. Home buyers often make 60 of 70% of their decision before they go inside the home. They view the interior to ratify their decision, so paying extra attention to your garden before listing your property may pay off.
Your garden and landscaping are major assets, and it’s surprising when someone with a nice front and rear yard, or patio or terrace doesn’t take advantage of it. Making sure your garden and landscaping look their best increases your home’s overall appeal and can lead to a higher selling price. Everybody responds to a well-kept, colorful garden and respond negatively to a neglected space, inside or out.
Hem-young and I are avid gardeners, and we keep established plants in large pots at our home that can be taken to new properties when we list them for sale.
The first step is to see what is there already, because many times the best investment would be in cleanup, pruning and cutting things back to make it feel more open and clean. If you have open beds and exposed earth fill them with plants that have the most show and the most coverage without requiring a big investment.
We recommend buying well-developed plants so they have immediate impact when they go into the ground. We like to group plants of the same type together to maximize that impact. And, if you have enough time to plan, consider preparing a seasonal explosion of color to coincide with your target listing date. You may plant in the fall for spring color if you are considering a February through June or July home sale, for example. Spring comes early to Pasadena!
