Principal Conductor Michael Feinstein will lead the Pasadena POPS on their final summer concert of the season in a unique experience. On September 7, “Michael Feinstein: The Gershwins and Me” will feature a selection of Gershwin songs accompanied by the director’s personal commentary about his years working as an assistant to Ira Gershwin.
“It will be my great joy to present a unique and singular program devoted to the works of George and Ira Gershwin. The selections will range from well-known standards to some delicious rarities that I hope will delight our listeners; for it is a rare experience to have this perfect combination of orchestra, guest soloists, audience, and venue to present what will be a fresh and memorable celebration of these treasured artists,” said Feinstein.
Feinstein and the Pasadena POPS will be joined by guest vocalists Tom Wopat and Catherine Russell. Wopat is a stage and screen star known for his rich baritone vocals and versatile musicality. Russell is a Grammy Award-winning vocalist part of a musical family known for its mastery of jazz and blues music.
“Tom Wopat is a particularly wonderful singer of American popular music, and Catherine Russell is highly acclaimed for her recent jazz recordings of standards and for her way with a lyric. She is one of my favorite singers,” Feinstein said.
The program will include Gershwin selections including the Overture from the 1945 film “Rhapsody,” and some original charts by the legendary Conrad Salinger written for the 1956 film “Funny Face.”
“There will also be Nelson Riddle settings of Gershwin instrumentals, plus a selection of his peerless arrangements for Ella Fitzgerald, unheard publicly for decades; arrangements that typify the timeless quality that the Gershwin works themselves represent,” said Feinstein.
