Greene and Greene are the most renowned practitioners of the American Craftsman Style in Southern California, and proudly, they were based in our beautiful Pasadena. Examples of their craft are the Gamble House, the Robert R. Blacker House, the William T. Bolton House, and the Journey House, all located within our city.
The American Craftsman Style movement was a comprehensive design and art undertaking that began in the late 1800s and extended until the 1930s. It is the style that developed homes with gabled roofs, front porches beneath the extension of the main roof, unique hand-crafted stone and woodwork, and much more.
Craftsman Weekend, which will be celebrated in Pasadena with various events between October 18 and 20, is a tribute to the Greenes and other local architects who significantly contributed to the American Arts and Crafts Movement. The weekend will start with an excursion to The California Club in downtown Los Angeles (designed by Robert Farquhar in 1887), where attendees will be able to enjoy an exclusive tour of a private collection of Plein Air paintings.
The three days will be filled with a large variety of workshops, lectures, tours, and a silent auction. Two receptions will also be held at two fitting locations: an opening function at the Blinn House (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) on Friday evening, and a Saturday exclusive tour and party at the William T. Bolton House, designed in 1906.
The event is presented by Pasadena Heritage, a preservation group dedicated to protect the historic architectural resources in Pasadena. Craftsman Weekend’s full schedule of events, times, and prices are listed on http://www.pasadenaheritage.org/craftsmanweekend
Tickets can be purchased by calling Pasadena Heritage at (626) 441-6333 or at their office (651 South Saint John Avenue in Pasadena) Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
