In the City of Pasadena, endowed with multiple historic landmarks and districts, the design of new buildings to be added to the existing architecture must be considered carefully. Residents and City government are often pressed to decide on a type of construction that will preserve and enhance the unique character of the City.
This will be the subject at the upcoming illustrated lecture, “Old + New: Designing New Buildings in Historic Settings,” to be held at the Pasadena Central Library on September 19. Steven W. Semes, architect and associate professor at the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture, will share what he has concluded about the matter in the course of his latest research.
Semes is the author of “The Future of the Past: A Conservation Ethic for Architecture, Urbanism, and Historic Preservation” (2009) and “The Architecture of the Classical Interior” (2004). He has a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University. His most recent work considers the best approach for the design of new buildings to be added to historic settings.
The lecture is presented by Pasadena Heritage, a preservation group dedicated to protect the historic resources in Pasadena. The event is co-sponsored by the Pasadena Public Library and therefore free and open to the public.
A reception with refreshments will begin at 6 p.m. on the Library’s Children’s Patio, followed by the lecture at 7 p.m. in the Wright Auditorium. A Q&A will then open at 8 p.m.
No reservations are required, but seating is limited to the first 190 attendees. For further details visit www.pasadenaheritage.org or call (626) 441-6333.
The Pasadena Central Library is located at 285 East Walnut Street.
