Pasadena has no shortage of dessert spots- especially along Old Town Pasadena’s Colorado Blvd. Passing by Piccomolo Italian Ice Cream, then, was nothing special for me, so I barely took notice of the rows and rows of gelato through the glass. On this particular day, however, I happened to be walking with a rather sweet-toothed friend of mine who was new to Pasadena and hankering for something cold. We went in to peek at the offerings.
Initially I aimed to fill up on a few spoonfuls of free samples: plain tart, espresso, mint chocolate, tiramisu, the usual… The kind associates just kept handing me all the spoons I could ask for… Then all the stars aligned as I tried a mouth full of cookie cappuccino, and I fell victim to a large size and my first stamp on the Piccomolo loyalty card.
The gelato was smooth and creamy – very classic – but this particular helping had a giant heap of chocolate cookie crumbles in every mouthful, and a cappuccino taste that satisfied my coffee fix. I’m not ashamed to say I went back the very next day.
Bottom line, this is a solid choice for strolling downtown with dessert on the go. Next on my list to try: Snozzberry… a mixed berry flavor good enough for Willy Wonka himself. Best of all, they can cram in multiple flavors- even in their small size portion.
This place was the first time I had ever tried gelato, and it was amazing.
The guy who works there (with a young girl probably daughter, so I’m pretty sure they own the place?) was so nice & friendly when I was ordering. He gave me samples of all the flavors that he liked most, and let me mix two flavors in one small size =)
When I gave him my stamp card, he was being so cute and stamped three stamps even though my sister & I only got two items. He kept laughing and talking to us even after we got our gelato, and he was so friendly that it brightened us up.
All in all, a perfect place to grab a late night, post dinner treat. Great customer service every time I’ve visited. 🙂 Prices are good, too! — Eileen P
