Pasadena’s Sunday Farmer’s Market is fairly well known to almost any resident or visitor of this fresh town, as fliers are pasted on every light post and in every window of every shop. I was surprised, then, to stumble upon a second farmers market on Wednesday afternoon, just off Altadena Drive.
I was walking to the Altadena Community Garden when I came upon a modestly sized row of happy people talking about fresh, quality food… I couldn’t resist walking in. On my stroll I stopped to sample apricot honey goat cheese, fresh squeezed juices, and an array of organic fruits and veggies. Since the market is sandwiched between the community garden and the park, families were camped out in the grass on blankets, hands sticky from diving into their blood oranges and avocados.
It’s obvious after chatting with the vendors that everyone there really cares about bringing quality food into the community (like local grass-fed beef). It is a perfect place to pick up some grocery takeaways like eggs and bread, or to grab a quick lunch of ever changing prepared menu items like tacos, BBQ, or gumbo. My favorite purchase: chai tea cashew brittle! It may not be Pasadena’s biggest, but it covers all the farmer’s market staples, and has a small town charm that’s hard to beat.
We met artist and chef James Graham of Ba Restaurant in LA recently. He said that shopping Farmer’s Markets is one of his favorite tasks in preparing menus for the restaurant. He mentioned several favorite Farmer’s Markets in the LA region, his favorite being in Santa Monica, but this Altadena market ranks high on his list. The Altadena Farmers Market takes place every Wednesday 4-8pm, and is located at 600 W. Palm Ave 91001
