Sometimes special occasions, from bridal and baby showers to meeting up with old friends, call for more than just your typical tea. Luckily, the Pasadena area has plenty to offer those that are looking for more than just a simple snack. Many establishments offer formal teas that go back to the British tradition or offer stunning ambience or upgraded foodstuffs. Here are a few of the more popular special teas in the area:
The Rose Garden Tea Room at The Huntington Gardens. The Rose Garden Tea Room at The Huntington has become almost legendary for its tea. Set amongst the stunning roses of The Huntington property, the Rose Garden Tea Room is a favorite place to introduce newbies to the art of tea, or bring along the kids. Although not a traditional or formal tea, it’s a great place to enjoy good conversation and a good cup of tea in beautiful surroundings. Reservations are required, so plan ahead. Then sit back and relax as you make frequent trips to the tasty buffet stocked with sandwiches, salads, desserts and more as tea and scones are refilled at your table.

Afternoon Tea at Langham Huntington Hotel. For a truly special treat head to the Langham Huntington Hotel Pasadena for their Tiffin Tea. A tradition Langham hotels all over the world, we are privileged to have their very special luxury tea in our town. Amongst the priciest teas around, Tiffin at The Langham is available on a daily basis, with a special Tiffin Chocolate Tea on Sundays. The Langham’s version of tea comes with a luxury twist, with sandwiches such as the usual smoked salmon being updated to ” Smoked Salmon Profiterole with Caramelized Shallot Caper Cream, Dill Sprig & Caviar.” Other special offerings include the ability to upgrade your tea with a glass of champagne. And the Tiffin Chocolate Tea on Sunday is a must-do experience for chocolate lovers because the bean is integrated into all items on a dessert-focused menu, including the savory sandwiches that start the experience. Tiffin Tea is served in the well-appointed Lobby Lounge and surrounded by the stunning ambience of the historic hotel, making for a very pleasant, albeit pricey, afternoon.

Rose Tree Cottage
An afternoon tea at Rose Tree Cottage is like stepping back in time. Now located in one of Pasadena’s famed historical homes, (Rose Tree Cottage moved from its original location in 2008), Rose Tree Cottage is run by a husband and wife team dedicated to the tradition of English tea. In a beautifully appointed home, with a nod to English country homes and tea rooms, tea is served at three different tea times, complete with fresh scones, Devonshire cream and homemade preserves. Opt to sit in the main dining room or head outdoors for a taste of British colonialism in the “Out of Africa” inspired patio. Throughout the year, Rose Tree Cottage hosts themed tea parties as well as private parties, memorial teas and other special events. Rose Tree Cottage also has a small shop, filled with everything you need to have tea at home, as well as other British items.
