With wedding season at prime time during the summer months, tea rooms around town are hopping. Historically afternoon tea started as a snack to avoid hunger pains caused from dining only twice a day: early in the morning and later in the evening. These days, any time can be teatime. Whether you are celebrating upcoming nuptials with a bridal shower or just want to get a quiet cup of tea to catch up with a friend, there are plenty of tea rooms to choose from, many conveniently located in Old Town.
Amongst the most popular tea rooms is The Scarlet Tea Room. This special tea room is gilded to the hilt for everything from teatime treats to special events and private parties to a romantic dinner, making it an impressive choice, especially when there is a pianist seated at the baby grand. I’ve only been there for Afternoon Tea, but the Scarlet Tea Room also serves tea in the evening as well as lunch and dinner. While a little on the pricey side, the Scarlet Tea Room often has online vouchers, making tea for two a very special treat.

Chado Tea has several locations throughout Los Angeles and we are fortunate to have one right in Old Town. Although not nearly as formal or frilly as many tea rooms, I have found Chado Tea to offer some of the best tea food in any tea room—even the selection of ever-changing desserts tends to taste as good as they look, a rare feat amongst petit four purveyors. Even better, Chado Tea tends to be much more affordable (and tastier) than some of its competitors.

The Tea Rose Garden is especially charming due to the cute touches found everywhere from the sky-blue painted ceiling to the garden in the back. Part florist shop, part tea room, the storefront is basically a one-stop shop for brides-to-be. The cozy spot is filled with tchokes and special finds that will keep guests entertained as they explore between courses. All of the attention to details and old-fashioned charm bring up memories of teas with grandmothers now gone, or the opportunity to make new memories between grandparents and grandchildren.

Outside of Old Town there are also plenty of other tearooms, but that’s another story.
